2018–2024
Over six years, Quiddity Press served as a laboratory for ideas. Founded as an independent platform for long-form writing, it became the home for over one hundred essays exploring the forces that shape our cultural, political, and intellectual landscape.
The Project
Quiddity Press was born from a conviction: that the public conversation deserved more than hot takes and outrage cycles. It deserved sustained attention. Essays ranged from three to ten thousand words, each an attempt to think through a problem from multiple angles, to follow an argument where it led, and to present conclusions with enough intellectual humility to invite disagreement.
The name was intentional. Quiddity—the essential nature of a thing. Every essay was an attempt to get at the quiddity of its subject, to strip away the noise and find the signal underneath.
Themes
Political Climate and Institutional Trust
A recurring thread was the erosion of institutional trust in American life. Multiple essays examined how the collapse of confidence in media, government, and academic institutions had created a vacuum being filled—sometimes constructively, often not—by alternative sources of authority.
"The crisis is not that people have stopped trusting institutions. The crisis is that many institutions have stopped earning trust."
Cultural Shifts and Identity
Another major strand explored rapid cultural transformations of the late 2010s and early 2020s—the politics of identity, tensions between individual expression and communal belonging, and the challenge of maintaining civil discourse in an era of moral certainty.
Geopolitical Developments
A third category focused on international affairs: great-power competition, territorial conflict in Europe, and technology-driven shifts in global power. These essays blended current events with historical context, arguing that the present is often less novel than it appears.
Legacy
Quiddity Press is no longer active—infrastructure costs eventually made continued operation impractical. But these essays represent a sustained attempt to engage with the world honestly, carefully, and in good faith. They are a record of one writer's effort to make sense of a complicated time in prose clear enough that others could follow the thinking, challenge it, and carry the conversation forward.
